Ruled by the moon! A phrase we here often and not usually in a complimentary way. But it ‘s true to say that my life is tailored to the phases of Diana herself. In particular I am attracted to the moons’ ‘Void of Course’ where the moon is between planetary aspects and thereby creates a magical vacuum whereby many tasks can be undertaken at a time when most people are unaware of what causes their lethargy and indifference.

Following the Moon Void of Course cycles is easy and can change out lives, yet few people are aware of this phenomenon and even many experienced astrologers overlook it. Since the moon is intimately connected to our intuition and instincts, following Moon VOC will help us make better choices in life. It’s been said that VOC is like driving through a tunnel where your antenna is unable to pick up the radio signals, or like being in a temporary vacuum, where perception is distorted.

The Moon travels around the earth in about 28 days, spending about two and a half days in each of the 12 zodiac signs. After the Moon leaves a sign and before it enters the next sign, it is called Void of Course. The Moon rules instinct and intuition. When the Moon is VOC, the energy flow available to all living things seems to slow down and our intuition is temporarily clouded. During a VOC it’s easy to be unrealistic or to perceive things differently than they really are. During this time people tend to feel scattered and unfocused. Time seems to drag on forever.

Knowing when the moon is Void of Course by checking the times in an astrological calendar can save you a lot of time, money, and effort. Follow them for a couple weeks, then don’t look at the calendar for a few days, then look back at those times later. You’ll find that even when you didn’t consciously know it was a VOC, things were still typical of a VOC. Moon VOC seem to affect everyone. Moon VOC can last from as little as 10 minutes to as long as two days. Moon VOC comprise, on average, about eight percent of the standard eight-to-five work week. Of course, it’s not always possible to schedule around these times, but it helps to be aware of the difficulties you may encounter.

During a Moon Void of Course, DO:
• Routine work.
• Meditate—this is a great time to go inward. You’ll be even more centered after the VOC.
• Break bad habits—if you can refrain during a VOC, it will be easier to do so afterward.
• Creative hobbies.
• Routine cleaning.
• Exercise.
• Relax.

During a Moon Void of Course, DON’T:
• Make important plans—they’ll never happen or will happen differently than expected.
• Brainstorm—new ideas never manifest or will backfire.
• Start anything new—things initiated are never finished or take much longer than expected to complete. New acquaintances made are short-lived. If you meet someone during a VOC, the interaction will not be meaningless, but probably different than you expected.
• Buy anything of importance—purchases made will never be used, will break down, or will have to be returned for unforeseen reasons.
• Do anything that requires a lot of concentration—it will require a lot more of your energy. If you have no choice, meditate beforehand so you’ll be as centered as possible.
• Schedule appointments: they will have to be changed or rescheduled—or you may get “stood up!”

People who were born during a VOC may not be as affected or may be affected differently. Follow the cycles and observe for yourself.

I receive so many letters and email from people who find it hard to cope with the trials and tribulations of modern life. Despite – or maybe because of – modern communications, material wealth and creature comforts people are more than ever finding difficulties within personal relationships, careers and health.
For my own part, I checked out of the rat race many years ago, my personal dreams have been realised and I live a very simple, but fulfilled life, in my cottage in the Irish hills. I know everyone cannot, or would want to, live this way but I do my best to try to help people iron out their problems and live a more trouble-free life.
I tend to stay well clear of politics but the recent election brought home to me how shallow and transparent politicians (of all parties) really are. They offer nothing in the way of comfort to the emotionally needy and spiritually bereft people of this land – only double-speak and sound-bites which all amount to absolutely nothing in the end. People who come to me for help have made a massive first step in the right direction – they are putting their faith in the metaphysical rather than waiting for their life to improve somehow in some other way. Yes, the ‘state’ can offer physical help – the emergency services, the NHS and so on are all there for our benefit (supposedly) – but often that is not enough.
There is another aspect and dimension to all our lives – the spiritual aspect that I deal with every day – though the politicians and other servants of the state would never, ever admit to its existence – they do not trust, even fear, something they cannot see and rationalise – regardless my mailbox continues to fill with enquires from the UK and all over the world from people who know and believe otherwise.

I have been away from my cottage for a few weeks on matters abroad. It is always good to travel but I always long for the rugged cliffs and wild seas of my beloved Ireland. After so much traveling it was marvelous yesterday morning to sit on a grassy knoll as the the pale dawn sun rose above the horizon and bathed the cliffs in a beautiful but chilly amber glow. As I sat there listening to the surf roll and watching the seabirds wheel above the gray-green sea I noticed a larger shape in the sky approaching from the west. This rare avian visitor rides much higher than the gulls and glides majestically as if powered by a solar energy from the sun alone. I recognise this bird, for it is the mighty Albatross I have seen several times over the years and as a springtime approaches so does this strange and magnificent bird visit my cliffs. I know nothing of the habits, migratory or otherwise, of these great birds, I have no way of knowing if it is even the same individual but as he descends lower to the waves and closer to where I quietly sit I fancy I recognise his profile and his approach to the land as one I have seen before. He wheels and the gulls try a mob attack – he glides on seemingly unconcerned, skimming the white tops of the waves. I watch him for perhaps twenty minutes, then as if beckoned by some distant star he rises fast and high into the now blue sky, heading south. The image of the bird stays with me long after he has flown. The villagers tell me these birds are rarely seen in these parts and I feel that the bird, when he does visit, brings a message – what that message is will no doubt reveal itself at some point. I will keep you informed.

I receive emails from people all over the world and many of them comment on the beauty of the place where I live on the West coast of Ireland. It is indeed a marvelous place to call home, with it’s soaring cliffs and the relentless pounding of the waves on the pebbled beach below my old stone cottage, but as in life, there is a price to pay and a balance to be struck.

My electricity is supplied by a generator and my water comes from a well at the bottom of my garden. Local villagers have offered to run a water pipeline to my cottage – I have thanked them and said no.

In the old Celtic world wells were considered sacred places, they were seen as thresholds between the dark, deeper, unknown, subterranean world and the outer world of light and form. The land of Ireland was understood in ancient times as the body of the goddess. Wells were reverenced as special apertures through which divinity flowed forth. Even to this day people visit sacred wells and springs. They walk several rounds of the well in a clockwork direction and often leave votive offerings. Different wells are thought to offer different kinds of healings.

When a well awakens in the mind, new possibilities begin to follow; you find within yourself a depth and excitement which you never knew you had.

So while hot piped water from the tap maybe something most people take for granted these days, I remain content with my daily pilgrimage through the brambles and nettles to that special place at the bottom of my garden where not only clear spring water bubbles forth but something quite magical as well.

A Sea Change for 2010

With two especially eclipsey eclipses in effect, January 2010 marks a milestone for everyone. The course of our individual and collective lives is about to undergo a quantum shift.

Months of planning have generated countless proposals and counter proposals. Most in response to unprecedented economic pressures. Most proposals would affect us significantly in some way. Many would introduce still more unknowns into our lives.

The delay is over. Some of these proposals are now being acted upon. Before January is over, many more will come into force. Still more will come into being.

Though many do not realize it, the changes now taking place will be very hard, in many cases, impossible, to reverse.

The Downside

January’s events will go beyond administrative, legal, bureaucratic and procedural changes, of course.

Health issues, family issues, work issues that have been hanging in the balance will now find resolution, for better or for worse. Crises will come to a head, for better or for worse. Illnesses will reach a crisis point. Ongoing financial or legal adversities will reach a decision point.

Problems simmering in the background, some invisibly and completely unknown to us, will manifest suddenly and dramatically. For example, structures that have been deteriorating, quietly and unseen, can suddenly collapse. Geological pressures that have been building slowly can suddenly bring earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. (This was wrote before the Haiti disaster occurred..)

As 2010 breaks upon us I find myself looking back at the year just passed with mixed emotions.

Joy, certainly, for the many people I have been privileged to help in their search for new and lost love. Happiness, for those whose aspirations and hopes have been realised, and a sense of achievement for those who have overcome the common everyday problems that we all encounter. Then there is the sadness that comes from finding that a runaway or missing person has met an untimely end and will never be reunited physically with his or her family. Then again, there is the absolute thrill of finding a missing person alive and well (though often confused) and ready to return home.

I have had a fulfilling year serving and assisting people from all walks of life and from all over the globe. I hope throughout the coming year I will be able to continue to help with personal issues of love and life, that very often come from people with no where else to go, from clients old and new.

I walked along the clifftops yesterday and felt the keen westerly wind skimming in off the Atlantic. The sea was wild, with white topped waves crashing in to the shore. Then came the first flurries of snow, dancing around me like so many white-clad fairies. This reminded me of yet another passing season and how time flies by in a twinkling of an eye. We should all make the best of now and think of those for whom even a simple walk among the snowlakes is not possible.

The Full Moon nearest the Winter Solstice is the Oak Moon, the Moon of the newborn year, the Divine Child. Like the Divine Child who is born to die and dies to be reborn anew, the ancient Oak has its trunk and branches in the material world of the living, while its roots, the branches in reverse, reach deep into the Underworld, symbolic land of the Spirit. As the roots probe downward into the grave-like darkness of the Earth, its branches grow ever upward toward the light, to be crowned by sacred Mistletoe.

My last few weeks have been filled with happiness and distress. Joy at a young man found and reunited with his family after years of drifting across America; distress after another young girl found in altogether different circumstances who will, sadly, never see her family again. This is the rhythm of life however, part yin, part yang, and the changing phases of the moon remind us that this is the natural fabric of things, for the most part mysterious and beyond our control, but ever present and ever changing. Our lot in life is not to question why but to accept the rhythms and try to live in harmony with their weft and weave.

The Mysterious Oak Moon

The Full Moon is with us again from November 2nd. Last night I sat and gazed for a long time at the magical orb that cast its silvery light over the sea cliffs where I live. The Hunters Moon is the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon  usually the biggest and brightest of the year, and nearest Samhain. So called since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, also other animals, which have come out to glean and can be caught for a thanksgiving banquet after the harvest. This moon is simply magical, take time to look, gaze and drink in the ethereal power of this brightest of full moons. The psychic energy simply radiates from its core. Look at it while you can and concentrate hard, let yourself be in it’s thrall; then tell me psychic phenomena doesn’t exist!

How my nerves tingle as we approach this magical time. I feel more alive and vital than at any other time of the year. I love to be alone on this night, except that I am not alone. The night air around my remote cottage is alive with spiritual energy. I sit and gaze at the moon and infinity and the answer to every question that has ever been asked is within my grasp.

Samhain (which is supposed to be pronounced sow-en, though some modern Pagans pronounce it as spelled) is the most important holy night of the year. In fact, it is considered the Celtic New Year. It is believed to be the evening in which the veil between the realm of the living and the dead is thinnest, allowing members of the spirit realm to walk the earth in great numbers. It is thereby considered the evening where our loved ones who have gone over to the other side of the veil are honoured with a special feast. This is certainly the reason All Saint’s Day was created by the Roman Catholic Church to celebrate honored individuals who have passed on, as well as the similar All Souls Day, which honours the memories of our individual loved one’s who have passed on. The association with spirits of the dead walking the earth, as well as faeries and other ethereal beings roaming the material plane in large numbers that evening, is probably the basis for the modern Halloween’s emphasis on ghosts and goblins, and the popular stereotypical image of the witch as a swarthy old crone with green skin was derived from negative images of real witches as being corrupt harbingers of evil or mischief. The jack o’ lantern, a still popular decoration, is derived from the image used by ancient Pagans to keep unwelcome spirits from the hearth during the celebration. Calls to your ancestors and loved ones for assistance is appropriate for those practicing spellwork on this day, as is spellwork for endings and calling upon the Crone aspect of the Goddess.

The God symbolically dies of old age at this point, though the Mother Goddess is now pregnant with the reborn Sun God in her womb.

Enjoy the spiritual freedom this occasion allows.

I’m finally back home after weeks of touring Europe, and Autumn, my favourite time of year is upon us.

In October, we see the Blood Moon travel through the sky. This moon is also called the Shedding Moon or the Falling Leaf Moon. Coming right before Samhain, it’s a time when the nights are crisp and clear, and you can sense a change in the energy around you.
